Recent Severe Storm and Tornado Damage in Atlanta, GA
5/5/2021 (Permalink)
It’s not every day that Atlanta experiences an EF-1 tornado, but this past Monday (5/3/21) South Fulton unfortunately experienced just that. All along Fulton Industrial Boulevard there was evidence of tornado damage. Sever large commercial buildings and logistical centers were severely damaged by the +100 mph winds and torrential downpour. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was on the ground for approximately 13 minutes, it’s path stretched about 5.8 miles and the width of the path spanned up to 250 feet wide. Trees, power lines and roofs were damaged during the storm. In some places trees were ripped from the ground. Walls were torn away from buildings. HVAC units and shingles were ripped from rooftops and scattered along the ground. Power crews worked hard and around the clock to restore power to hundreds of Atlanta Metro homes and businesses quickly.
The following Tuesday was no easy day in the park, for Atlanta property owners. During most storm damage victims cleanup efforts, a flash flood warning was issued for all of Fulton County. Steady to heavy rain fell for most of the day adding to the already saturated Atlanta water table. Areas of North Georgia experienced rain in excess of 9” of water over the course of Monday and Tuesday, with scattered storms predicted for the next few days. Flash flood warnings and watches will be something home and business owners will need to keep an eye out for over the next few days.

Tornado Safety Tips
- BE PREPARED - Make sure to have a list of important information like telephone numbers, an emergency kit, fresh batteries and battery-operated radio, TV, or internet-enabled devices so that you can monitor up to date emergency weather information. You should also have a tornado emergency plan outlining shelter that accommodates your family, people with special needs, pets, and yourself.
- STAY AWARE - Pay close attention to changing weather conditions in your area in order to protect yourself and family from possible harm during a tornado. Tune in to local radio or TV stations for weather updates. Signs like dark or green colored sky, large dark low-lying clouds, large hail, or a loud roar that sounds like a freight train are all warning signs that a tornado might be imminent.
- SEEK SHELTER - Debris will become airborne by high winds during tornadoes. This falling and flying debris causes most deaths and injuries during tornadoes, so seeking safe shelter is crucial to tornado safety. Safe areas typically include basements and inside rooms that do not have windows. Get to the lowest floor possible that has no windows like bathrooms, closets, and center hallways. For added protection seek shelter under sturdy furniture like desks or heavy tables. You can cover your body with blankets or mattresses making special effort to protect your head. Do not stay in a mobile home; they pose major safety risks during tornadoes.
