Fire & Smoke Damage

*Here are some “Do’s and Don'ts” for fire and smoke damaged properties. Remember SERVPRO always advises home and business owners that have suffered smoke and/or fire damage to consult a licensed and insured fire restoration specialist.

Things NOT TO DO while waiting for help to arrive:

• Attempt to clean carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting a restoration professional at SERVPRO of South Atlanta
• Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without contacting a restoration professional at SERVPRO of South Atlanta.
• Attempt to clan any electrical office equipment such as computers, printers, phone systems, etc. All units should be powered down until inspected by a restoration professional from SERVPRO of South Atlanta.
• Operate any electrical fixtures (lights, plugs, etc.) that has been exposed to water from the loss.
• Launder/dry clean towels, gloves, uniforms, or any other garments. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odors or stains.
• Allow food or drinks stored in vending machines or other areas that were near the fire or exposed to heat to be consumed.

Things TO DO until help arrives:

• Wash hands often and consider wearing a respirator as smoke/soot can be hazardous to breathing. 
• Secure critical and/or sensitive documents.
• Make sure access is available to all entry and exits around the building
• Begin prioritizing critical areas to be addressed and cleaned.
• Limit movement in the property to prevent the spread of soot particles.
• Shut down all air handlers in the affected areas and consider shutting down units that border the affected area to limit the spread of soot and odor.
• Ensure all computers, printers, and other electronics are shut down to prevent soot particles from being pulled into the units and increasing damage to devices.

Vandalism Damage

*Here are some “Do’s and Don'ts” for Vandalized properties. Remember SERVPRO always advises home and business owners that suffer property vandalism to consult a licensed and insured vandalism restoration specialist.

Things NOT TO DO while waiting for help to arrive:

• Attempt to clean spills like ink, towner, paints, etc.
• Operate equipment or appliances damaged by vandalism.
• Allow employees or the public to track though any wet or dry spills.
• Discard items from the damage until SERVPRO of South Atlanta restoration specialists have inventoried and photo documented the damage.

Things TO DO until help arrives:

• Evaluate damaged areas and determine priority for restoration.
• Make a list of damages, lost products, etc.
• Save containers that reveal the ingredients of spilled inks, cleaning products, paints, etc.
• Sweep or vacuum broken glass from flooring or furnishing where possible.

Harmful Waste (Sewage, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.)

• Touch or handle items that might have been in contact with pathogens or otherwise contaminated.
• Attempt clean-up of any kind.

Things TO DO until help arrives:

• Call emergency service personnel if the situation is life-threatening.
• Stay out of affected areas.
• Treat all bodily fluids as if they are contaminated.
